Quiksilver are a globally recognised brand established in 1969. From humble beginnings manufacturing boardshorts in their home garage in Torquay, Alan Green and John Law set the foundations for Quiksilver to become the largest and most prestigious apparel company in the action outdoor sports industry, with a diverse range of products including a complete clothing collection, accessories, eyewear, watches, sun care, winter sports and golf equipment under their umbrella.

The Challenge

With the redevelopment of the Quiksilver Surf centre in their spiritual home, Quiksilver’s flagship store was envisioned as being a drawcard for the region, with the large, double-storey space boasting not only a surf shop, but also a rooftop bar and cafe, and barbershop. The venue is set to host weekly yoga classes, Friday surf industry nights with live music, and live streaming of major surf events.

The main task for POSmusic was to create a unique music program that represented the lifestyle of their brand, taking into account the fact that the bar and the retail area inside the store had different demographics, trading patterns, and atmosphere.

The Answer

Quiksilver’s music program was developed by POSmusicologists after extensive research into the Quiksilver brand. Taking everything from soundtracks in the Quiksilver filmography to relevant local and international festival line-ups (including Quiksilver’s own), POSmusic were careful to match the music with the adventurous, high-energy lifesetyle of action sports community. More than being about any particular genre, POSmusic developed a program that matched the feeling of catching a wave or charging down a slopes; as Quiksliver themselves say, “it’s not just music to us, it’s an attitude”.

POSmusic also developed a separate program for the restaurant and café, which provided a contrasting atmosphere to the energetic retail playlist. From gentle campfire acoustic vibes and chilled electronic sounds, POSmusic ensured the music matched the vibe of the bar as it changed throughout the day, bringing a different sound to Friday and Saturday nights as people enjoyed the Quiksilver bar inbetween live bands.

The POSmusic programs were delivered via our unique hardware solution that requires no maintenance or interaction, meaning the staff are free to attend to customers without the need to manually change playlists as the café patrons move from morning coffees to after dinner drinks.
