One of rock’s most iconic vehicles has sold at auction this week for a history making US $1.76 million.
Once owned by Janis Joplin, the psychedelic 1965 Porsche nearly tripled its estimated auction price.
While originally Pearl White, the Porsche was transformed by roadie Dave Richards into a kaleidoscopic masterpiece which he called the History of the Universe.
The car, pictured below, had been on display at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the last two decades until the family decided to put it up for auction.
As reported by Rolling Stone, Joplin’s sister said, “Janis drove everywhere, all around San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when she was recording there.”
“Wherever Janis went in her car, fans recognised it.”
So while Janis may have sung about wanting a Mercedes Benz, in the end the Porsche really was her dream car. You can read more about the car’s interesting history here.
