In an announcement that has certainly come as a surprise to us… it turns out that Eminem has quite a way with words.
In a welcome change from the usual heavy metal study, researchers Varun Jewalikar and Nishant Verma somehow managed to convince MusixMatch to fund a study investigating who, out of the most successful 99 artists in music, has the largest vocabulary.
As reported by Billboard, the angry blonde one came up trumps with a vocabulary of 8,818 individual words, which was almost 2,000 words higher than next closest artist Jay-Z, who topped out at 6,899 words.
Rounding out the top five were Tupac, Kanye West, and the decidedly un-hip-hop Bob Dylan, who admittedly does have a slight advantage by virtue of the fact that he has released 36 studio albums in a career spanning over fifty years. After Kanye, the fifth wordiest Hip Hop group was the Black Eyed Peas, who may also have had an unfair advantage given much of their vocabulary is in a fictitious language.
But there you have it. Much to our parent’s horror, rappers are (allegedly) the custodians of the English language…
