Billie Holiday may have died in New York in 1959 but this autumn she’ll be returning, to the iconic Harlem Apollo theatre, in lifelike hologram form. The Apollo is a fitting theatre for Lady Day to return to; Holiday debuted there at the tender age of 19 and went on to appear there repeatedly throughout her career.
Holiday isn’t the first singer to be immortalised in this way; the late rapper Tupac appeared to perform a duet with Snoop Dogg at Coachella festival four years ago. The same company who made his hologram are making Billie’s – Hologram USA.
The Apollo is expanding its daytime programming beyond tours and educational programs and will be the first US theatre to offer ongoing presentations featuring such cutting-edge technology. It will also go beyond simply being a concert- Apollo theatre president Jonelle Procope explained that Billie’s hologram will interact with visitors to the Apollo, answer questions and sing songs.
Strange fruit indeed…
